The short answer
Installing the Drimatt digital instrument cluster involves four main stages:
- remove the surrounding dashboard trim and temporarily remove the factory instrument cluster;
- detach the factory clear lens and black inner bezel, then protect and store those two parts separately;
- fit the remaining factory cluster assembly—including its body and electronics—into the Drimatt structure and complete the three required harness connections;
- reinstall the combined assembly, perform a function test before fitting the trim frame, and restore the removed panels.
The documented installation uses the original locating points and requires no dashboard drilling or cutting. It is not simply a screen swap: the factory cluster must be handled carefully, the removed lens and inner bezel must be stored, and the wiring must be fully checked before the trim is restored.
The person who documented this installation does not describe themselves as an experienced installer, yet completed the work in approximately one hour by following the guide. That is one real installation record—not a guaranteed installation time. Owners who are comfortable removing trim and handling locked electrical connectors may attempt the installation themselves; anyone who is unsure should use a qualified installer.

Before starting: tools, safety and fitment
Tools used in the documented installation
- Plastic trim removal tool
- #2 Phillips screwdriver
- 10 mm wrench or socket if the negative battery terminal will be disconnected
- Masking tape or a soft protective cloth
- Clean microfiber towel
- Clean air blower
Preparation checklist
- Park on a level surface, shift to P, apply the parking brake and switch the ignition off.
- While steering-wheel adjustment is still available, lower the steering wheel fully and extend it fully toward the driver. The goal is to create the largest possible gap between the steering wheel and the instrument panel.
- Switch the ignition completely off and keep it off while the factory cluster connector is unplugged.
- Drimatt's current field installation method normally leaves the negative battery terminal connected. If an installer or workshop procedure requires it to be disconnected, complete Step 2 first; the steering wheel cannot be electrically repositioned after battery power is removed.
- Protect nearby dashboard and steering-column trim.
- Use plastic trim tools only. Release clips gradually rather than forcing a panel.
- When unplugging a connector, hold its housing and release its lock. Never pull directly on the wires.
- Confirm that the Drimatt product and supplied connectors match the vehicle before continuing.
Understand what is removed—and what stays in the vehicle
This is the most important distinction in the installation.
The factory instrument cluster is temporarily removed from the dashboard. Its clear acrylic lens and black inner bezel are then detached. These two outer parts are not installed in the Drimatt structure. Protect and store them separately if a future return toward the factory configuration may be required.
The rest of the factory cluster assembly is not discarded. The remaining assembly—including its body and electronics—is fitted into the Drimatt structure and returned to the vehicle as part of the combined installation.
Part 1: Remove the factory instrument cluster
Step 1: Remove the left air vent and driver accessory-controls panel
Protect the surrounding trim with masking tape or a soft cloth. Insert a plastic trim tool at an accessible panel edge and release the clips gradually. Pull the complete left air-vent assembly and the driver accessory-controls panel straight outward without twisting them.
Support each panel while pressing the connector locks. Disconnect the wiring before moving the panel away from the dashboard. Remove the complete accessory-controls panel rather than separating individual switch modules.
Step 2: Remove the start-button panel
Use the plastic trim tool at the edge of the surrounding panel—do not pry on the engine start/stop button itself. Release the clips progressively, pull the complete panel straight toward the driver, support it and disconnect the start-button wiring by pressing the connector lock.
Step 3: Remove the black cluster bezel
Confirm that the steering wheel is fully lowered and extended. Protect the steering column and adjacent trim. Release the bezel clips one at a time, then hold the bezel with both hands and pull it straight toward the driver.
Do not pry against the clear factory instrument lens.
Step 4: Remove the two mounting screws and unplug the cluster
Support the factory cluster while removing the two lower mounting screws. Keep both screws for reinstallation.
Pull the cluster outward only far enough to reach its rear connector. Do not let the assembly hang from the wiring. Press the connector locking tab and unplug it while holding the connector housing. Place the cluster on a clean microfiber towel without resting it on its clear lens.
Keep the ignition fully off while the factory cluster is unplugged.
Part 2: Remove and store the factory clear lens and inner bezel
Step 5: Release the clear-lens retaining tabs
Place the factory cluster face-down on a clean microfiber towel. Keep fingerprints, dust and sharp tools away from the clear lens. Do not touch the gauge needles or dial faces.
Start at the lower edge. Depress one retaining tab at a time while gently opening the seam. Alternate between the left and right sides to avoid twisting the lens, and release the top tabs last while supporting the lens.
Do not remove the rear housing screws, use a metal tool or over-bend the plastic tabs.
Step 6: Remove the black inner bezel and protect both parts
Set the clear lens on a clean towel with its inner surface facing upward. Release the remaining black-bezel tabs individually, then lift the inner bezel straight up without tilting it into the gauge needles.
Use clean air for loose dust. Do not wipe the inside of the clear lens with a dry cloth.
Part 3: Connect the harness and assemble the cluster
Step 7: Identify the required and optional connections
The documented harness contains three required connections:
- Digital cluster main connector — connects to the rear port of the Drimatt cluster.
- Connector A — connects to the factory cluster socket.
- Connector B — connects to the original vehicle plug.
The optional video inputs are color-coded:
- Blue: left-side camera input
- Red: right-side camera input
The USB lead can be routed to an accessible location for approved software updates or phone charging. The spare ACC 12 V lead and reserved serial-port connector remain disconnected.
Step 8: Complete the three required connections
Insert the main harness connector into the rear of the Drimatt cluster until fully seated. Align Connector A with the factory cluster socket before applying pressure. Join Connector B to the original vehicle plug and confirm that its lock is engaged.
If optional cameras are installed, connect the blue input to the left camera and the red input to the right camera. Route the USB lead without placing it against a sharp edge.
After connecting the harness:
- confirm that every required connector is fully seated;
- verify that no lock is partly engaged;
- keep the harness away from sharp edges;
- avoid tight bends;
- make sure the wiring will not be trapped between housings or trim.
Step 9: Fit the remaining factory cluster assembly into the Drimatt structure
Before joining the housings, confirm again that the factory clear lens and black inner bezel have been removed and stored.
Route the harness through the designated front-left opening. Align the Drimatt housing with the locating tabs on the remaining factory cluster assembly. Press evenly around the outer frame until all tabs engage.
Install one retaining screw at each marked point and tighten only until secure. Check that:
- the housing is fully seated;
- the gaps are even;
- no wire is pinched or sharply bent;
- both retaining screws are present;
- no pressure has been applied to the display.
The documented structure follows the original locating points, so no dashboard drilling or cutting is required.
Part 4: Reinstall, test and restore the dashboard
Step 10: Position the assembly and reinstall the original screws
Carefully place the combined cluster assembly into the dashboard opening. Confirm that no wiring is trapped behind it. Reinstall the two original dashboard mounting screws and tighten only until secure.
Do not install the trim frame yet.
Step 11: Perform the first power-on test
Confirm that all three required connectors are fully seated. If the negative battery terminal was disconnected after the steering wheel was positioned, reconnect it now. Then switch the ignition on. Before restoring the trim, check:
- the display powers on normally;
- vehicle information is present;
- no new abnormal warning message appears;
- the optional left- and right-camera views work correctly, if cameras are fitted;
- USB phone charging works, if used.
If a check fails, switch the ignition fully off before rechecking every required connector. If a new warning remains after the connectors have been reseated, stop and contact a qualified installer or Drimatt support.
Step 12: Align the trim-frame clips and restore the panels
After the function test passes, switch the ignition off. Hold the trim frame in the correct orientation and align every clip with its matching dashboard slot before pressing.
Press evenly around the outer edge until the frame is fully seated. Do not force it and do not press on the display. If the frame does not sit flush, remove it and check the clip alignment and wiring path.
Reconnect and reinstall the start-button panel, driver accessory-controls panel and left air vent. Confirm that each panel is flush and secure.
Final installation checklist
Installation is complete only after every applicable item passes:
- □ Both Drimatt-assembly retaining screws are installed.
- □ Both original dashboard mounting screws are installed.
- □ The digital cluster main connector, Connector A and Connector B are fully seated and locked.
- □ The spare ACC 12 V lead and reserved serial-port connector remain disconnected.
- □ The harness is not pinched, sharply bent or touching a sharp edge.
- □ The trim frame and all original panels are flush and secure.
- □ The start button, accessory controls and air vent operate normally.
- □ The display powers on and vehicle information is present.
- □ No new abnormal warning message appears.
- □ Optional camera views and USB charging work correctly, if used.
- □ The removed factory clear lens and black inner bezel are protected and stored.
Installation questions
Does the GX400 or GX460 dashboard need to be cut?
No drilling or dashboard cutting is required in the documented installation. The combined assembly uses the original locating area and the original dashboard mounting screws.
Are the factory clear lens and black inner bezel installed in the new cluster?
No. Those two outer parts are removed and stored separately. The remaining factory cluster assembly—including its body and electronics—is fitted into the Drimatt structure and returned to the vehicle.
Can an owner install this product without professional installation?
Yes, an owner with basic hands-on ability can attempt the installation by following this guide. The three required electrical connections are straightforward and use locked, vehicle-specific connectors. The installer documented here did not consider themselves highly experienced and completed the installation in approximately one hour. That single result is not a promise of the same time for every owner. Stop and use a qualified installer if a panel, connector or installation step does not match the guide.
Is this only a plug-in screen swap?
No. The three required connections are simple, but installation also requires dashboard-trim removal, preparation of the factory cluster, integration of the remaining factory assembly, cable routing and a complete function test.
Which Lexus GX vehicles are currently supported?
Drimatt currently lists this version for 2014–2019 Lexus GX400 and GX460 vehicles. The illustrated installation was documented on a 2014 GX460. Confirm the exact vehicle with Drimatt before ordering because market equipment and connectors can still vary.
How long does installation take?
The installation documented for this article took approximately one hour. Treat that as one first-hand installation record, not a guaranteed duration. Working pace, experience, trim condition and vehicle configuration can change the time required.
When should the trim frame be installed?
Only after the first power-on and function checks pass. Keeping the trim off during testing allows the installer to inspect the connectors and cable routing if a correction is needed.
What should I check if the display has no power?
Switch the ignition fully off, then verify the battery connection, digital cluster main connector, Connector A and Connector B. Do not continue reassembly until the cause has been identified.
Can the USB port be used for software updates?
Use only a software package supplied for the exact Drimatt product. Keep vehicle power stable and do not remove the USB device or switch the ignition off during an update.
